Description
A comfortable chair and a Mary Stewart novel are a match made in heaven. For Harriet Evans, at least, reading her is preferable to many other authors. Thornyhold is a house like something out of a fairy tale - a rambling old cottage set deep in the wild wood, left to its new occupant by a cousin who occasionally brightened her childhood. It's a place where Gilly Ramsey can start over and leave her bleak future behind. The old house itself is beautiful, with tufts of rosy houseleek and spreading gilt on the lichens. The hedges are protective, their rusty thorns and bastions of holly and juniper forming a natural prison that's also strangely alluring.
