Description
Thomas Varker Keam: Indian Trader A pioneering figure in American Indian arts and crafts, Thomas Varker Keam transformed the trading industry by promoting Native artist modifications to increase sales. His innovative approach had a significant impact on the evolution of Hopi pottery. Keam's business ventures extended beyond his trading post in Arizona Territory, where he operated from 1874 to 1902. He developed lucrative contacts with museum curators and anthropologists, selling extensive collections to institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution and the Field Museum. Keam also played a key role in early archaeological work in the Southwest. As an advocate for Native American rights, Keam represented the Hopis and Navajos in confrontations with the U.S. government over "civilizing" programs between 1869 and 1902. His efforts aimed to protect Indian political and cultural independence.
