Description

Thomas Telford was born in Westerkirk, Scotland in 1757 to a family of modest means. His early life took him from stonemasonry apprenticeships to work in Edinburgh and London, laying the foundations for his future success as an engineer. Telford's reputation grew rapidly, earning him the role of surveyor of public works for Shropshire in 1787. He went on to build several notable projects, including the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which showcased a new method of construction using cast-iron plates and masonry. His work also included the Ellesmere Canal, the Menai Suspension Bridge, and Katherine's Docks in London. Throughout his career, Telford was responsible for building over 1,000 miles of road, including the main road between London and Holyhead. He died in 1834, leaving behind a legacy as one of Britain's most important engineers.
