Description
Things Aren't Always as Mother Reports is a poignant collection of colour portraits and landscapes that explore the idea of family through the documentary style. Paul Cohen's extended series interrogates the complexities of boyhood, capturing his sons in a way that reveals their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Through the ritual of photography, Cohen's sons become performers, enacting the traits of boyhood, while the pictures also communicate the photographer's own concerns and vulnerabilities. The cumulative effect of these images transcends a deeply personal experience to convey something universal about boys growing up in the UK today. The photographs raise questions about the nature of identity, the impact of environment, and the fragility of happiness. This is a powerful and introspective work that invites the viewer to reflect on their own experiences and relationships.
