Description

Thick and Dazzling Darkness explores how American poets have used language to express the divine in an age of secularism. Peter O'Leary examines the work of several writers, including Whitman, Dickinson, Robinson Jeffers, Frank Samperi, Robert Duncan, Joseph Donahue, Geoffrey Hill, Fanny Howe, Nathaniel Mackey, Pam Rehm, and Lissa Wolsak, to argue for the importance of religious poetry in modern American literature. O'Leary considers how these poets drew on various spiritual traditions, such as Catholicism, Gnosticism, and mysticism, and how they articulated the spiritual in their work. He also examines an anxiety of misunderstanding between secular and religious impulses in the study and writing of poetry. This book presents close readings of individual poets, revealing their complexity and offering a defense of the value and meaning of religious poetry against the grain of a secular society.
