Description

The Zulus of New York by Zakes Mda is set in 1885 New York City, where a troupe of performers claiming to be from the Zulu kingdom have arrived. They are hired for their traditional dances, but what they don't know is that their presence has sparked both fascination and outrage among the public. Among the city's squalid vaudeville acts, Em-Pee, a former warrior who once carried his spear and shield, catches sight of Acol, a Dinka princess on display in Madison Square Park. For Em-Pee, it's love at first sight, but Acol is not free to love anyone back. As the Zulus navigate their new life in America, they must confront the harsh realities of their past and the expectations of their present.
