Description
The World of Orderic Vitalis: Norman Monks and Norman Knights Orderic Vitalis was a remarkable chronicler who lived in a world of great change. Born near Shrewsbury in 1075, he was sent as a child to the Norman abbey of Saint-Evroult, where he witnessed fundamental shifts in church organisation, aristocratic inheritance, and attitudes towards knighthood. This book explores monastic life and culture, its interaction with the lives of courts and Norman families. It also delves into the life of Orderic himself, offering a unique insight into his experiences. The Historia is complemented by an appendix containing Orderic's own account of his life, providing a moving personal perspective. Marjorie Chibnall brings her expertise to this study, drawing on her extensive knowledge of the Anglo-Norman world.
