Description

The Winter War 1939-40 by Philip Jowett is a detailed account of Finland's resistance against the Soviet Union during the winter of 1939. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Finnish Army and Air Force managed to resist Russian attacks for over two months, inflicting significant losses on the Soviets. The conflict was sparked by the Soviet Union's invasion of Finland in late 1939, with the Finns ultimately ceding 9% of their territory in a peace treaty. However, the war had a profound impact on both countries, with the Soviets suffering heavy losses and Finland retaining its sovereignty. This fully illustrated text provides a comprehensive overview of the forces involved and all stages of the Winter War, making it an essential resource for anyone interested in military history or the conflict itself.
