Description

In 1993, Gideon Mendel spent several weeks photographing the patients and staff at the Middlesex Hospital's Broderip and Charles Bell wards, two of the few dedicated AIDS wards in London. The resulting black and white photographs offer a poignant and intimate glimpse into the lives of those affected by HIV at a time when antiretroviral medications were still in their infancy. The patients, many of whom were young gay men, were facing a terrifying prospect: an early and painful death. Despite the stigma and fear surrounding the disease, four patients - John, Steven, Ian, and Andre - chose to allow themselves to be photographed, alongside their families, lovers, and friends. This act of bravery was a testament to their courage and humanity. Mendel's photographs capture the intimate relationships between patients, staff, and their families, as well as the active engagement of patients in their treatment. The resulting book is a powerful and moving tribute to the lives of those affected by HIV in the 1990s.
