Description

The Turncoat A Novel by Siegfried Lenz

A haunting and thought-provoking novel about the human cost of war, set in the final summer of World War II. In this gripping tale, a young German soldier is tasked with ensuring the safety of a railway line deep in the forest on the border with Ukraine and Byelorussia.

As time passes and the soldiers isolate themselves, they are haunted by madness and the desire for death. An encounter with a young Polish partisan forces one of the soldiers to confront the questions that have been obsessing him: when conscience and duty clash, which is more important? The result is a powerful exploration of the complexities of human loyalty and the nature of guilt.
