Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, was forcibly transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau in April 1942. He was assigned the role of a tattooist, tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners. Over two and a half years, Lale witnessed unimaginable atrocities, yet also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. As a prisoner, Lale risked his life to exchange jewels and money for food, keeping his fellow prisoners alive. In July 1942, he comforted a young woman waiting to have her number tattooed onto her arm. Her name was Gita, and in that moment, Lale vowed to survive the camp and marry her. This book is a vivid and harrowing re-creation of Lale Sokolov's experiences as a tattooist in Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is a testament to the endurance of love and humanity under the darkest possible conditions.
