Description

Nelly Sachs's prewar poetry and prose offer a nuanced understanding of her exilic experience. A new critical analysis sheds light on this largely unexamined aspect of her work, revealing a complex and dynamic conception of language and words. Through close readings of both her prewar and postwar works, Jennifer Hoyer identifies a diasporic rather than exilic landscape in Sachs's poetry, one that promotes the intellectual and linguistic power of the wanderer. This perspective offers new insights into Sachs's significance as a Holocaust poet and twentieth-century German-Jewish writer. Hoyer's analysis provides a fresh understanding of Sachs's work, challenging prevailing interpretations and offering a deeper appreciation for her complex and multifaceted oeuvre.
