Description

The Silverado Squatters is set on Mount Saint Helena, a high mountain in the Californian Coast Range. While it may not be a destination for globe-trotters, those who live nearby find it an interesting place to explore.

From its summit, you can see San Francisco Bay to the south, with Tamalpais and Monte Diablo on one side, and the open ocean thirty miles away to the west. To the east lies the Sacramento Valley, with the Central Pacific railroad beginning to climb the Sierras. The mountain also looks out over the white head of Shasta in Oregon to the north.

The author's experiences at Silverado were recorded in a journal called "Silverado Sketches", which was later incorporated into this book and other works such as "Essays of Travel" and "Across the Plains".
