Description

The Seafarers by Nevil Shute is a novella that explores the joy of productive work. Written in 1946-47 and now published for the first time, it tells the story of two people who meet while one brings his motor gunboat to Portland harbor to be dismantled and disarmed. Their initial encounter is promising, with both admiring each other's dedication and cheerful competence. However, when they meet again in peacetime, away from the sea, their differences are magnified without the work they love. Puzzled and disappointed, they part, but not permanently. This novella dramatizes a universal theme, highlighting how our passions and pursuits can shape our relationships and sense of self.
