Description
The RAF Pathfinders: Bomber Command's Elite Squadrons In August 1942, the formation of the Pathfinder Force marked a significant shift in the fortunes of Bomber Command. Initially, its effectiveness had been difficult to gauge, with only a third of aircraft reaching their target area and fewer still accurately placing their bombs. This was partly due to the German use of an elite force of pathfinder aircraft during the Coventry bombing campaign. The need for similar specialist squadrons became apparent, with crews handpicked for their discipline, courage, and skills in various flying jobs. The concept of a Target Finding Force was developed by Sidney Bufton, Deputy Director of Bomber Operations, who successfully pushed for its implementation. Don Bennett, the first Commander of Pathfinder Squadrons, brought a unique approach, never accepting second best and becoming a legendary figure among those who served under him. Pathfinder Squadrons were equipped with top-of-the-line aircraft, including the Lancaster bomber and later the versatile Mosquito. Joining one of these squadrons was a rare privilege, but it came with a significant increase in the risk of being shot down.
