The Protector Lamp and Lighting Company Ltd: A Centenary History In 1873, a new company was formed in Manchester, marking the beginning of a century-long history of innovation in lighting. The Protector Lamp and Lighting Company Ltd was established to acquire the business and patent rights of William Edward Teale, a pioneering oil and lamp manufacturer. Teale had developed two significant patents: one for 'Improvements in Mining Lamps' and another for 'Improvements in Guards for Gas Lights, and in an improved method of Lighting while under the protection of Guards.' The company's founders, including Henry Newall, Samuel Armitage, and Charles Tattersall, invested £26,040 in the venture, with each subscribing to 165 shares. Teale agreed to become the company's manager for seven years, earning a minimum salary of £300 per annum, plus a share in the profits. This agreement marked an important milestone in the company's history, as Teale relinquished his patent rights in all future inventions.
