Description

The Notorious Mrs Ebbsmith by Arthur Wing Pinero is a dramatic and entertaining play that explores the complexities of marriage and convention. In 1895, Agnes Ebbsmith, a young widow with a scandalous past, travels to Venice with her companion Lucas Cleeve, an up-and-coming Tory MP who has abandoned his wife in London. Their unconventional arrangement is put to the test when Lucas's aristocratic family arrives from London, disrupting their peaceful existence. This playtext, slightly adapted from the original, offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of two individuals who refuse to conform to societal expectations. With an introduction to the play and its historical context by Dr Sos Eltis, this edition provides a unique insight into Pinero's work and the world in which it was written.
