Description
The Nether World by George Gissing A man returns to London after inheriting a substantial sum of money from his deceased son. Despite his newfound wealth, he chooses to live modestly and keeps his fortune secret. His presence in the city coincides with the life of his granddaughter, Jane, who is being exploited by her employers, the Peckovers. However, his plans are complicated when his son, Joseph, returns to London after a period of absence. Joseph's return is met with tension, particularly from his wife, Clem Peckover, who suspects that he may be wealthy due to his father's supposed riches. The situation becomes further complicated by the presence of Sidney Kirkwood, Jane's friend, who harbours romantic feelings for her.
