Description

The Mormon Church and Blacks: A Documentary History By Matthew L. Harris and Newell G. Bringhurst This 2015 publication presents thirty official statements from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints regarding the status of African Americans within the church. The authors analyze these documents to understand how they reflect uniquely Mormon characteristics and provide context for the history of race and religion in the United States. The book offers an informed view of behind-the-scenes church politicking before and after a significant change in 1978, when the church lifted its ban on ordaining black males for the priesthood. This shift had far-reaching implications for African Americans within Mormonism, including their access to temple rituals considered essential for salvation. This documentary history is a valuable resource for experts and those interested in understanding a complex aspect of Mormon history and belief.
