The Marquis De Sade

Donald Thomas's biography of Donatien-Alphonse-Francois, Marquis de Sade, offers a nuanced exploration of a complex figure whose name is instantly recognizable but whose life remains shrouded in mystery. Born into aristocratic decadence, De Sade's life was marked by scandal and controversy, including allegations of poisoning and unnatural practices that led to his imprisonment on six separate occasions. Despite facing death multiple times, De Sade managed to escape the guillotine while within sight of it, and spent his final years in the asylum of Charenton. This biography unravels the paradoxical nature of this man, who was both a monster and a product of his time, driven by excess and persecuted by those around him. Set against the turbulent background of revolutionary France, Thomas's illuminating biography provides a fresh perspective on De Sade's life and thought, shedding light on the circumstances that gave rise to some of his most infamous literary works, including Juliet, Justine, and 120 Days of Sodom.
