Description

The Magistrate by Arthur Wing Pinero is a comedy of manners that explores the complexities of relationships and social class. When Cis Farringdon's godfather arrives, his mother Agatha takes drastic measures to conceal her true age, leading to a series of outrageous events at a Hôtel des Princes party. As the night descends into chaos, the guests must navigate their own secrets and scandals in order to avoid detection by the law. The next day, Cis' stepfather Posket must preside over court, where he is forced to confront his own role in the deception. This witty and engaging novel offers a glimpse into the lives of the upper class in 19th-century Europe, exposing the hypocrisy and social conventions that govern their world.
