Description

The Long Emancipation: A New Humanism for a World in Need of Freedom. Rinaldo Walcott argues that Black people globally live in the time of emancipation, but one that has not yet achieved true freedom. This condition, known as the long emancipation, is characterized by the ongoing interdiction of potential Black freedom and the continuation of systemic injustices. Walcott contends that Black unfreedom lies at the heart of the modern world, and that achieving freedom for Black people would have a profound impact on human experience worldwide. In this book, Walcott offers a new perspective on what it means to be human, one that acknowledges the absence of Black people from traditional conceptions of humanity. By examining examples from across the globe, Walcott shows how Black people must constantly fashion alternative conceptions of freedom and reality through expressive culture. This book is a powerful exploration of the ongoing struggle for freedom and equality, and its implications for our understanding of what it means to be human.
