Description
Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt was one of Germany's most prominent military leaders during World War II. His career spanned both the Western and Eastern Fronts, from 1914 to 1918, before he rose steadily through the ranks to plan the attack on Poland in 1939. Von Rundstedt played a key role in subsequent campaigns, including the invasion of France in 1940 and the assault on Russia. However, his fortunes changed when he was sacked at the end of 1941. He was recalled again in 1944 to command Army Group South during the Ardennes counter-offensive in December that year. Captured by American forces after the war, von Rundstedt was handed over to British authorities who wanted to try him for war crimes. His health prevented this from happening, and he spent the remainder of his life under house arrest.
