Description
The Jean Freeman Gallery Does Not Exist by Christopher Howard In 1970, a series of advertisements appeared in four leading art magazines, promoting a group show and six solo exhibitions at the Jean Freeman Gallery. The gallery's address was fictional, with street numbers changing from one day to the next. This project, conceived by artist Terry Fugate-Wilcox, was both a work of art and a critique of the art world. Fugate-Wilcox's scheme was eventually exposed, but its impact on the art world has been largely forgotten. In this book, Christopher Howard examines the Jean Freeman Gallery project in the context of other magazine-based works by notable artists, including Mel Bochner, Judy Chicago, Yoko Ono, and Ed Ruscha. Howard demonstrates that Fugate-Wilcox's project embodied many key aspects of Conceptualism, including documentation and dematerialization, serialism and process, text and image, and publishing and publicity. This book brings the Jean Freeman Gallery project back into view, shedding new light on its significance in the history of art.
