Description

Aleen Cust's remarkable story of ambition and determination is a testament to the power of female resilience. Born into an aristocratic English family in 1868, Aleen defies societal expectations to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. With the encouragement of her guardian, she enrolls at the New Veterinary College in Edinburgh, adopting the pseudonym A. I. Custance to avoid family embarrassment. As Aleen navigates the challenges of her chosen path, she faces significant obstacles, including the law and her own family's disapproval. Yet, driven by her passion for animals and her desire for independence, she perseveres, paving the way for future generations of women in veterinary medicine. Through meticulous research and elegant prose, Penny Haw brings Aleen's story to life, shedding light on a pivotal moment in history that continues to inspire women today.
