Description
The Inspiration Machine explores how creative digital technologies and artificial intelligence are embedded in culture and society. Eitan Y. Wilf examines three ethnographic cases involving jazz musicians and poets, who use computerized algorithms as creative partners to expand their artistic horizons. These artists do not simply execute preconceived ideas with the help of algorithms, but rather delegate control and decision-making to them in an effort to find inspiration and innovation. However, the algorithms developed by these artists remain rooted in the social predicaments they were intended to overcome. This study highlights the importance of considering computational solutions in relation to their cultural context. By investigating the potentials and pitfalls of autonomous digital technologies in art, Wilf shows that creative solutions are best developed within the social and cultural contexts that gave rise to the perceived insufficiencies.
