Description
The Insanity of Normality: Toward Understanding Human Destructiveness by Arno Gruen Arno Gruen challenges the conventional view that humans are born with an innate tendency to destruction and violence. Instead, he argues that self-hatred is the root of evil, stemming from a deep-seated sense of fear that leads us to create a false self in order to gain power over others. This pattern of adaptation and rebellion is revealed through case studies, sociological phenomena, and literary works. Gruen's conclusion is that autonomy is not easily attained, but its absence can be catastrophic for both individuals and society. He believes that escape from this pattern lies not in rebellion, but in the development of personal autonomy. This book offers a thought-provoking exploration of the insanity of normality, one that seeks to repair the destructive fallout from our pursuit of conformity. A valuable contribution to the field of psychology, The Insanity of Normality is a text for anyone seeking to understand human destructiveness and promote a more compassionate social order.
