Description

A remote mining community in the American North West at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century is the setting for this historical thriller. As the gold rush comes to an end, the euphoria and promise of the past give way to greed and betrayal. Thomas Speake, a young English reporter from Chicago, records the lives of those who have been drawn to the town in search of wealth. Speake's own reasons for coming to Hope are complex, driven by memories of his father's prolonged death that still haunt him. His investigation into the circumstances surrounding a young Swedish boy found dead beneath the ice on the day of his arrival leads him to uncover a web of rivalry and deceit between two key figures in the town: Josh Allenby, undertaker and owner of the ice barn, and Brogan Sullivan, proprietor of the saloon. As Speake's feelings for Lucy Harrigan, one of Sullivan's prostitutes, grow, so does his animosity towards Sullivan. The events in the town spiral out of control, leading to a final deadly confrontation between Speake and Sullivan in the ice barn, where only one will survive.
