Description
The House of Bernarda Alba by Marta Dunphy-Moriel and Federico García Lorca In this new translation of Lorca's masterpiece, the oppressive traditions of early twentieth century Spain are transposed to 1950s England, where the stifling heat is replaced by the oppressive rain. The result is a powerful exploration of class, grief and the devastating consequences of trying to repress the human heart. The story revolves around Bernarda Alba, who imposes an eight-year period on her household after burying her second husband. Her five daughters, aged between 20 and 39, are controlled and prohibited from any form of relationship, leading to a dramatic confrontation with their own desires and identities. This translation distils the essence of Lorca's original play, maintaining its emotional drive while highlighting the parallels between two distinct eras and cultures.
