Description
The Reindeer Hunters by Lars Mytting is a novel set in 1903 Norway. Twenty-two years have passed since Astrid Hekne died in childbirth, and her son Jehans lives on a smallholding in the hills near Butangen. He is drawn to freedom, fishing, and reindeer hunting, which leads him to meet a stranger over the body of a huge reindeer buck. Pastor Kai Schweigaard still cares for Astrid Hekne's grave outside the new church in Butangen, where he is tormented by his old betrayal that led to death. He sets out on a quest to find an ancient tapestry made by the sisters - the Hekne Weave - which he hopes will reveal how he can remedy his past wrongdoings. This novel explores themes of love and bitter rivalries, sorrow and courage, history and myth, as Norway enters a new era marked by the first electric light and the Great War in Europe.
