Description

The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain is a novella by Charles Dickens, first published in 1848. It is the fifth and last of Dickens's Christmas novellas, a series that explores the spirit of the holidays.

The story centres around a man haunted by his past, who is visited by a ghostly apparition that proposes a bargain. In exchange for forgetting his sorrow and troubles, the ghost offers to cancel his memories of pain. The man, initially hesitant, eventually agrees, leading to a chain of events that affects those close to him.

The novella ultimately concludes with the man transformed, having learned to be humble and loving, much like a character from Dickens's earlier work, A Christmas Carol.
