The Happy Prince A Tale by Oscar Wilde In a town where poverty and misery are prevalent, a small swallow is left behind after his flock flies to Egypt for the winter. He comes across the statue of the late 'Happy Prince', a figure who has never truly known sorrow, having lived in a palace where sorrow is not allowed. The Happy Prince asks the swallow to take a ruby from his hilt, sapphires from his eyes, and a golden leaf covering his body to give to those in need. As winter approaches, the Happy Prince's beauty fades, and his lead heart breaks when the swallow dies from the cold, having given his life to help others. The statue is then brought down, melted in a furnace, and left in a dust heap. However, an angel deems the swallow and the Happy Prince's broken heart the two most precious things in the city, and they are taken to heaven, where they live forever in a city of gold and a garden of paradise. This poignant tale explores the themes of selflessness, kindness, and the transformative power of love.
