The Glass Palace tells the story of Rajkumar, a young man who helps on a market stall outside the Royal Palace in Burma. His life is forever changed when he is rescued by a Chinese merchant and builds up a logging business in Upper Burma. Haunted by his vision of the royal family, Rajkumar journeys to an obscure town in India where they have been exiled. As he navigates the complex web of relationships between the Burmese, Indian, and British, Rajkumar marries one of the court ladies, Miss Dolly, and becomes embroiled with a redoubtable woman named Jonakin, part of the British-educated Indian colony. The story follows the fortunes of Rajkumar's business ventures, from 1870 through to the Second World War, as he builds up his empire across Malaya, Singapore, Burma, New York, Thailand, London, and Hong Kong. Through Rajkumar's journey, Amitav Ghosh explores the tensions between different cultures and the ways in which historical events shape individual lives.
