Description

The Forgotten Country House: A Story of Rise and Fall Roundway Park, built between 1777 and 1783, is a fine Palladian house that epitomised the dynamism and success of Georgian Devizes. Its owner, James Sutton, was one of a new breed of landowners who benefited from trade boom and local influence. The house, designed by James Wyatt and landscape designer Humphry Repton, perfectly represented the high ambition of the age. It continued to prosper under the Colston family in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. However, after the death of Rosalind Colston in 1954, the estate was sold and the house largely demolished due to family tragedy and social change. This book tells for the first time the story of Roundway's rise and fall, exploring the lives of gentry families who played a central role in rural communities.
