Description
The Dunciad in Four Books by Valerie Rumbold is an authoritative edition of Alexander Pope's poem, accompanied by extensive annotation and appendices. This comprehensive work presents Pope's text alongside explanatory notes, providing a clear understanding of the poet's references to various books and pamphlets. A substantial introduction offers a helpful approach to the work, while a bibliography provides suggestions for further reading. The commentary draws on fifty years' scholarship, covering literary, bibliographical, cultural, and political aspects of the period. This edition is the only one available that presents both verse and prose in a clearly laid-out form with modern commentary. Published in 2009, this edition offers a stimulating and accessible approach to Pope's masterpiece, making it an ideal choice for undergraduate readers and scholars alike.
