Description
The Dream of the Celt by Mario Vargas Llosa is set against the backdrop of one of Ireland's most tumultuous periods. In 1916, Roger Casement awaits execution in London's Pentonville Prison, his petition for clemency threatened by the revelation of his private diary and secret life. Casement's past year has been marked by a desperate attempt to raise an Irish brigade from prisoners of war to fight alongside the Germans against the British Empire that awarded him a knighthood just a few years earlier. The consequences of this decision are dire, as Dublin lies in ruins after the disastrous Easter Rising. This gripping historical novel explores the complexities of Casement's life and the events that led him to take such a drastic step.
