Description

Vincent van Gogh's drawings are some of the most expressive in the history of art. This comprehensive account celebrates the artist's achievements in this field, exploring his remarkable output of over 1,000 works during his short life. The book arranges these drawings broadly thematically, from personal explorations to depictions of everyday subjects like potato harvesters and knotted poplars. Eminent art historian Christopher Lloyd encourages readers to consider the artist's drawings from a fresh viewpoint, examining both successes and failures, experiments and trials. By studying Van Gogh's drawings, we gain insight into his approach to drawing, which was both instinctual and deliberate. The book draws on examples from the artist's family correspondence, sketchbooks, and comparative artworks by other artists, providing a nuanced understanding of why drawing is central to Van Gogh's oeuvre.
