Description
In 70 CE, nine hundred Jews held out against the Roman army in ancient Israel. Only two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic event, Alice Hoffman weaves a spellbinding story about four remarkable women during the desperate days of the siege of Masada. Their lives are marked by secrets - about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them, and whom they love. Yael is an assassin's daughter, Revka has been torn apart by the Romans, Aziza has been raised as a warrior, and Shirah possesses ancient magic. As supplies dwindle and the Romans draw near, these women must confront their fears, guilt, and hunger for companionship. Hoffman's masterpiece explores the complexity of relationships between the women, their courage, and the power of human connection in the face of adversity.
