Description
The Devil is Leaving His Cave by Wendy Ewald In 1990, photographer Wendy Ewald was invited to conduct photography classes for children from Mayan communities in Chiapas, Mexico. Instead of taking pictures herself, she guided her students in capturing their own images of daily life, dreams, and desires. This unique project offers a glimpse into the everyday realities of life in Mayan communities just before the devastating Zapatista uprising. Ewald's work is now complemented by new photographs made in collaboration with fifteen young Mexican Americans living in Chicago, coordinated with the help of Centro Romero. The resulting book presents a poignant comparison between growing up in different Mexican geographies with diverse histories, while sharing universal joys and sorrows of childhood. Through these photographs, Ewald sheds light on the complexities of childhood experiences and the resilience of communities facing change.
