Description
The Deltics and Baby Deltics: A Tale of Success and Failure The Deltic class 55 Locomotives were a highly successful first generation diesel locomotive introduced to British Railways between 1960 and 1962. Twenty-two machines were produced, with the prototype built in 1956 and extensively tested on express trains before 1960. Today, six examples of the class remain, including the 1956 prototype, a testament to their enduring appeal. In contrast, the Baby Deltics were a derivative design, using a single engine for shorter services. Only ten were constructed between 1961 and 1962, primarily for use on services out of London Kings Cross. Despite their innovative approach, the Baby Deltics were withdrawn from service within a decade due to their limited success in main line service. This book provides a detailed account of the Deltic and Baby Deltic locomotives, exploring their development, design, and operational history.
