Carl Hammerschlag, a family physician working in a Native American hospital in the Southwest, was introduced to a patient named Santiago, a Pueblo priest and clan chief, who asked him where he had learned how to heal.
The old man's response, "Do you know how to dance?" surprised Hammerschlag, but he humoured the priest by demonstrating some steps. The priest then taught Hammerschlag that if he was to heal people, he must be able to dance and hear his own music. This experience led Hammerschlag to synthesise his Jewish heritage with his experience of Native Americans, producing a practice open to all methods of healing.
