Description

Durtal, a shy and censorious man, seeks spiritual solace by immersing himself in another age. He is writing a biography of Gilles de Rais, the fifteenth-century child-murderer thought to be the original for 'Bluebeard'. As he delves deeper into his research, he becomes increasingly disillusioned with the vulgarity of everyday life and turns to the occult for comfort.

His search for spiritual solace leads him to a world of black magic and erotic devilry in fin-de- siècle Paris. There, he meets the exquisitely evil madame Chantelouve, who introduces him to a twilight world of depraved rituals. As Durtal becomes more embroiled in this world, he must confront the darkness that lies at its heart.

Published in 1891, this novel cemented Joris-Karl Huysmans's reputation as a writer at the forefront of the avant-garde. Penguin Classics presents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines, with authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors.
