Description

At noon on Friday 3rd August 1787, Northampton's Racecourse was abuzz with 5000 people gathered to witness four men being hanged for their crimes as members of the notorious Culworth Gang. This gang had carried out 47 recorded robberies and many other offences across the East Midlands, leaving a trail of victims in its wake. The four men were among up to seven who made up the gang on any given raid, but only they would meet their fate at the makeshift gallows. Caught due to carelessness after twenty years of roaming the countryside of South Northamptonshire and neighbouring counties, this is the first full history of the worst gang of highwaymen in the county's history. This book tells the story of the Culworth Gang, a group that operated with little regard for consequence, leaving behind a legacy of crime and punishment.
