Description
The Cost of Sugar is a historical novel that explores life in 18th century Suriname under Dutch rule. Set against the backdrop of the sugar plantations, the story follows two Jewish step sisters as they navigate their privileged lives and confront the harsh realities faced by the slaves who toiled on the estates.
Through the eyes of Elza and Sarith, Cynthia McLeod sheds light on the hypocrisies of colonial life, revealing a complex web of relationships between colonists and slaves. As tensions rise and the slaves decide to take action against their oppressors, the two women find themselves caught in the midst of a struggle that will change their lives forever.
This frank and thought-provoking novel offers a powerful portrayal of a pivotal moment in history, one that challenges our assumptions about the past and its ongoing impact on our world today.
