Pablo Neruda's memoir is a moving record of his life as a poet, a patriot, and a man of conscience. Born in southern Chile in 1904, Neruda recounts his early years as a motherless child in the wild, and how he began writing poems before leaving the countryside for Santiago.
As a globetrotting Chilean consul, Neruda traveled extensively, including a stint in Spain during its civil war, and in Mexico, where he attracted attention for his involvement in a man suspected of conspiring to assassinate Leon Trotsky. His memoir follows his travels, including his short-lived service as a Chilean senator, and his subsequent exile after being driven from his senate seat in 1948.
Now expanded with newly discovered material, this edition of Neruda's memoir provides a revealing and intimate look at the life of one of the 20th century's most important poets. The memoir concludes shortly after the coup in 1972, which overthrew his close friend Salvador Allende, and Neruda's own battle with cancer.
