Description
The Borgia Family Rumor and Representation by Jennifer Mara DeSilva explores how the early modern Borgia family's reputation was shaped by historical observations and later interpretations in various forms of media. This study examines the choices made by the family, particularly Pope Alexander VI and his children Cesare and Lucrezia, and contextualizes them within contemporary expectations and reactions. The book delves into the ways in which the Borgias became emblems of anti-Catholic and anti-Spanish criticism during the early modern period, as well as their enduring reputation as symbols of the Renaissance. By analyzing both historical events and modern representations, DeSilva sheds light on the Borgia family's ongoing history and significance in the twenty-first century. This book will be of interest to researchers and students working on interdisciplinary aspects of the Renaissance and early modern Italy.
