Description

The Birthplace by Henry James A satirical tale that explores the excesses of bardolatry and the power of imagination. In this short story, Morris Gedge is appointed as the custodian of a residence associated with Shakespeare's life, but soon begins to question the explanations he is given to visitors. As Morris struggles to maintain his composure, his wife becomes distressed, while the owners of the temple issue a warning. The story takes a humorous turn in its conclusion, where Morris gives a lecture about Shakespeare as a child. Despite initial reservations, tourist revenue grows, and Gedge's role becomes more lucrative. This thought-provoking tale showcases James's unique style and wit, offering a fascinating insight into the world of literary satire.
