Description
The Battlers by Kylie Tennant follows the lives of those struggling to survive during the Great Depression. Against the backdrop of 1939 New South Wales, this novel explores the harsh realities faced by 'battlers' - people who 'battle' for work, making ends meet and trying to stay one step ahead of hardship. Against this unforgiving landscape, two characters emerge: Snow, a long-lanky man with a past he'd rather forget, and Dancy Smith, a young woman with a fragile existence. As they travel together, their paths converge with that of Dora Phipps, a woman whose refined pose belies the hardships she faces. Through their stories, Tennant sheds light on the struggles of those who 'battle' to survive, revealing the resilience and resourcefulness that defines this era.
