Description
The Balkans From the End of Byzantium to the Present Day by Mark Mazower A fresh perspective on the region's complex history, dispelling Western cliches and stereotypes. From the end of the 20th century, the Balkans were often seen as a troubled part of Europe's past. However, 200 years earlier, this land was not the Balkans, but rather the Ottoman-ruled Rumeli, with its rich history dating back to Byzantium. Mark Mazower's narrative explores how mountains, empires and religions have shaped the lives of those who inhabit this region, which has been a bridge between Europe and Asia for centuries.
