Description

Walter Benjamin's monumental work, The Arcades Project, is a sprawling collection of reflections and quotations that span over thirteen years. Conceived in Paris in 1927, this project was left unfinished when Benjamin fled the Occupation in 1940. The Arcades Project presents a unique montage of sources, arranged into thirty-six categories, which explore the arcades of nineteenth-century Paris - glass-roofed rows of shops that were early centers of consumerism. Here, Benjamin examines the commodification of things and locates the decisive shift to the modern age, critiquing the bourgeois experience of history. In this cluttered and bustling space, street and interior merge, historical time is broken up into kaleidoscopic distractions and displays of ephemera. It is here that Benjamin seeks to represent and liberate the suppressed "true history" beneath the ideological mask.
